Ordered this because the button broke on the original. Installed in about 40 minutes, but I think I could do it in 30 if I had to do it again. As others mentioned, search for and watch the video. The tools you'll need are simple: a hex key, a phillips screwdriver and something small and pointed to get the plastic screw cover button out. I think my most tedious task was removing the button without scratching it.
The steps are not too hard. Save all your screws - you'll need them.
Remove the armrest - 2 screws under the plastic cover in the back (cover pops off with your fingers)
Set the emergency brake and put the car in neutral
remove the console - 3 screws, one in the back under the button and two in front under cupholders
remove the set screw from the shift knob
unplug the O/D wire - see it from the passenger side
remove the old shift knob and slip on the new one, with the set screw
plug the new wire in
put the console back on - 3 screws
put the armrest back on - 2 screws, plus the plastic cover
put the button and the cupholders back over the screws
drive your car out for some liquid refreshments to celebrate the money you saved by doing it yourself
The gear shift arrived fast & was identical to the bad shifter in my 2006 Escort. Took me about 30 minutes to install, it was a lot easier than I had thought. You will see the OD wire plug on the passenger side of the shifter once you remove the center console. It will make sense how to route the OD wire once you have the console removed.
My only complaint is that the appropriate set screw was not included in the package, and I have yet to find a screw that fits. The set screw is important, because without it, the shift handle can easily be pulled up, disconnecting the electric plug inside -- and at that point, you have to start all over again, removing the entire console and reinstalling the shift. BE SURE YOU REPLACE THE FLEXIBLE PLASTIC PIECE WITH THE GEAR INDICATION MARKINGS ON IT BEFORE YOU PUT ON THE SHIFT HANDLE! Also... I'm not sure I would have been able to install this myself if not for a particular how-to video on YouTube. I don't recall the man's name, but he does a great job of walking you through every step. You can identify his video, because it is much longer than any of the others that show up in a search. It's the only one that helped me.
Helpful hint watch a you tube video before installing! It took longer to get the center console out than to actually install the part. And the wife connection is itty bitty use caution so as to not damage it.
The little white rectangle connection piece was too small but it wasn't visible to the naked eye, only once it was hooked up. I recommend testing the shifter prior to putting all the nuts and console together to make sure yours doesn't slip out. Ended up swapping most of the pieces to the old handle to get it to work safely and securely.

R + R original knob that wore out and broke. About 1 hour to replace. Requires removal of center console. Overdrive connector a little challenging to thread and plug in. Excellent value from this vendor.
It was easy to install, one screw and one connector after removing the center console.
Maybe 1.5 hours.
It feels solid, looks just like the original but freshened up, does its job well.
I shopped around and this was the best price. The fact it came from a Ford dealership let me know I was going to get what I ordered. Easy to install. My 14 year old Ford Focus thanks you !!!!
