Broken shift lock buttons seem to very common on late model Hondas. I purchased this one for our 2017 CRV. It appears to be identical to the original so only time will tell if it holds up. Although there were no installation instructions, I was able to find plenty of videos and even a dealer install bulletin direct from Honda on the internet. WARNING! Many videos show the button being installed by simply pressing it in until it clicks. DO NOT use this method unless you are ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN you have all the pieces from the old button. Compare the new one with the old to be sure. Often times, the button will break leaving pieces inside the shift handle. (I encountered this problem) The handle is easy to remove by popping off the U shaped trim piece on the back of the shift. This will reveal 2 Philips head screws which once removed, allows you to remove the handle. Be careful not to lose the small grommet attached to the shaft. Check inside the handle for any broken pieces. They have a tendency to stick to the lubricant used on the sliding surfaces. Once you are sure all fragments are out, apply a dot of lubricant to the grooves and angled slot on the new button. Place the spring in the handle on the cross shaped tab and align it with the similar shaped tab on the new button. Gently push the button in, wiggling it slightly until the hook on the bottom of the button locks inside. Ensure the button presses in all the way and releases freely. If not, you may have to remove it and check for more fragments. Once the button is installed, place the handle back on the shaft and replace one screw. Turn the ignition on (or start the engine) and check to see that the shifter works properly through all positions then install the remaining screw and snap the cover back on.
The shift knob button on my daughter's 2017 CRV broke. YouTube has many videos of this issue and the fix required. Shame on Honda. I decided to take the shift apart (remove the cover and two screws) and then the shift "head" slides off. I then took the end piece off from the other side (opposite side of where you will put in the shift knob button) and with that it was very easy to see where the plastic from the old broken shift knob button still remained. I then removed that remaining broken plastic piece. It took 1 minute to place the end piece I had previously removed back in place and then to install this shift knob button. I then went back out to the car, placed the shift head back on the stalk, put in the two screws and placed the cover back on. Worked like a charm and my daughter has had no issues with it since. I suggest that you remove the shift head like I did. That way you can do all the repair work in the comfort of your home while also being totally certain that all the plastic from old broken shift knob button has been removed. Sure, a couple of extra steps, however it's cold in Maine at this time of year and why make things more challenging or uncomfortable or uncertain when you can truly do the repair in the warmth of your house? Good luck and as I said, shame on Honda.
This piece works as it should however there’s a trick to install so for the people that couldn’t get it in this is what you need to do. I broke the first one trying to install it and had to order a replacement. Don’t just slide it in there. Most likely there’s tiny bit of plastic still stuck in there from the last one that broke. Take off the shift knob it’s very easy. You simply have to put the car into low gear put your parking brake on and turn the car off. Then take a flat head screwdriver be very careful and pray off the back of the shift knob this will expose the screws to take the shift knob off of it’s Pole. Unscrew the shift knob remove it put your car back in park. Now this is the important part. Make sure there are no plastic bits inside the old shifter then take a flat head screwdriver and popped out the little white piece that the shift knob sits on and that attaches to the shifter. Slide new button in! Now remember that piece we just removed that little white sleeve that fits on the shifter! Put that on the shift pole before you slide the actual piece that your shift with then you just re-attach everything you might have to fiddle a little with the button so it slides on perfectly but this is the secret you have to remove that little white fitting before you slide the gearshift back on this will solve your problem and it does fit the 17 CRV Perfectly if you do this!
Read the reviews, several others have had the same problem as me. Button does not push in far enough.
My 2017 CRV shift release button broke. When I installed this it would not go into park. It's as if the button needed to go in just a fraction of an inch farther and it would not go. I reinstalled the broken shift button (It was broken in a way it still works but falls out of the shifter) and it shifted back into park again. I tried for a good 30-45 mins and could not make it work. I'm not the handiest man around but I've done countless brake jobs, alternators, A/C...I could not make this work. I called my local Honda and he said it's a recall and to bring it in.
Worked as advertised. Watched a video on YouTube about how to put it in. Easy to install once I got the broken part out of the inside. 2017 CRV.

If the shifter lock button on your CR-V breaks, no need to see a dealer - instead use this replace button. Be sure to remove all pieces of the old button, some might be stuck in the grease package. Easiest option in my view is to remove the shifter handle and clean it out (find instructions on youtube).
