Better than expected for the price which is at least 1/2 of anything else on the market. Decent quality plastic. not quite high gloss, but just right in a classic sense. Hemispherical mold seam is visible and mine had a slight 1/8" divot blemish at this seam but no big deal. The inserts are high quality but they try to save money by combining 4 thread combinations in 2 inserts. This has a down side. In my application the ball doesn't thread down far enough on the shifter threads to cover them before bottoming out on the smaller threads of the other side of the adapter. I solved this with a hacksaw. I cut off the side of the insert that housed the smaller adapter thread I didn't need. This left me with a shorter insert that would thread all the way onto the shifter. This allows the insert to seat deeper into the knob as well as allowing any extra shifter thread length to extend farther into the unthread portion of the knob of which there is about a 1/4 inch.
Decent basic shift knob. No frills or bells and whistles, but that’s exactly what I wanted. Put it on a Joyner Sand Viper so the threads were a little off, but nothing some silicone couldn’t fix. The extra threaded inserts are really tiny, so beware of that. The knob itself is just plastic threads, so be careful not to strip it. Worked great for my application, but you might want something a bit more substantial for your daily driver.
The the money, it did the job. The original Infiniti shift knob was just heavier so I just had to add force to shift smoother. But for most cars, it should work fine.
I bought my shifter ball from 123 Autoparts. It was supposed to come with two threaded adapters in the package, but there was only one adapter inside. The package was partially open when I received it. Of course, the adapter that was missing was the one I needed. Rather than return the adapter and wait for a new one, I phoned the Dorman company direct to request if they could possibly mail me the other adapter. I spoke with Jim at Dorman. He was very knowledgeable about their products; looked up the shifter ball (which is actually a discontinued item for them) and then offered to ship me the threaded adapter at no charge. I had it in my hand the next day! What incredible service.
It is a very well-made quality product and is exactly like the original shifter ball that came on my car when it was new. BEWARE! DO NOT do like some of the other reviewers commenting negatively because this item does not fit their shifter. Check the Dorman website ahead of time to make sure this ball is correct for your car. It is not a universal part. It is specifically made to fit only certain years and certain brands of cars.
Nice and simple. Most everyone is spot on about the fit. It doesn't extend down far enough, so when you replace the original knob, you can feel some of the threading underneath it. For me, it wasnt a big deal. I'm replacing a gunky old knob on a beat up truck. I just wrapped some black electrical tape underneath it. I can see myself hating it if I was using it in a nicer car. Then again, I would probably spend more than 9 bucks if that were the case.
