On 2001 Suburban 1500 LT, the "tow/haul" function was out for years before I bothered figuring out why ... for anyone who may not know, the wire that connects the "tow/haul" button at the end of this switch to the wiring/controls that turn the function on/off runs out the end of the shift lever, under the rubber boot on the column end of the shifter, around the steel assembly that supports the steering wheel, and then connects to a socket included in a big loom of ignition and other wires on the other side of the column. This wire is pretty tough (two very small insulated copper wires, but enclosed in a much tougher insulator/sheath covering), but it eventually breaks at the anchor point closest to the shift lever, just due to getting stressed at this point every time you move the shifter.
To do this replacement right (and make the new wire last as long as possible), you really need to pull out any center console stuff, remove the parking brake handle mount and knee cover below the steering column, remove the steel shroud that covers all the wiring under the steering column, and THEN remove the shift lever and wire. It connects to the shifter base with a single TORX screw.
With all that stuff out of your way, you'll be able to clearly see what you're doing, and how the wire is supposed to run to its connector. I'd also recommend cutting off the zip tie closest to the connector, and replacing it with a new one when you're done.
I always thought it was dumb replacing the entire shift lever just because this wire broke, and patched the wire once before without taking off all the coverings and removing the shift lever. It just ended up breaking again within a year or two. Now that I've removed all the cover panels and done this job the "right" way, I realize I could have done a much more durable repair of the original wire if I had done that before, and probably will now anyway, just to keep the OE lever/switch around as a spare, in case I have any trouble with this one in the future.
However, I'm not regretting the purchase. This lever is an exact match for the OE, with the exception of the labeling on the shift handle ... it's a picture of a trailer instead of the words "tow/haul." The wire is the same, and it comes with the two little anchors that hold it in place on the steel assembly under the steering wheel. The boot seems a little less pliable than the original, but I suppose it will loosen up with time/use. I'm guessing the Chinese manufacturer that made the lever/wire assembly is the same one that was making this part for GM before their "authorized" parts suppliers stopped selling it. Nice part, same fit/function as the OE, fair price ... especially when you consider the fact that dealers were charging twice this amount when they were still selling this part.
I received this as promised by Amazon on the 26th July which was amazing to me as they didn't get it shipped until around 5:30pm on the 25th. The repair was flawless and the repair kit worked great I would recommend parts from the supplier they got this from as I spoke to Lonnie the manager about the item and he was the most helpful customer service representative I have dealt with. I must admit I was very dubious about doing this repair as wiring is not my forte but after watching several utube videos it was as simple as can be the item is just like the factory original and after I installed it I road tested it and it worked perfectly.
I hope Amazon posts this review as everything I wrote here is very relevant to the repair kit, I understand my mention of Utube may not be appropriate but there is a lot of knowledge on there and being a 63 year old grandmother I needed the help.
well extremely happy with this product i have read a bunch of the reviews for this product all the same it don't feel like stock,it's not the same of coarse not it's what they call aftermarket the only difference i noticed that was different was the picture of the tow trailer on the handle that it was not painted white but if that's what your looking for paint it your self. So if some one is reading this and you need this handle am a car guy since i could walk well worth the money great product would buy it again if i ever needed it..Dont let other bad reviews make you go to other place's.
This unit is an exact replacement for my 2001 Suburban shifter assembly ..was a pretty straightforward install ..make note of your old boot ..as the boot installs a certain way ..(subtle difference in right side/left side) ..works great!
Quick and easy replacement. Works like OEM. Only time will tell as to the longevity. I did the cheap fix a few years ago (spliced a piece of wire into the break) but I figured for the low cost of this replacement I would gamble on a much longer life since the original lasted over 10 years.

Haven't received this as of yet, it will be installed in just a few minuted after receiving, I repaired the OEM but it broke again so I decide to replace it and see if I can get a few years out of it before this one breaks too. Tow a 16,000lb trailer so I really need he tow-haul function to work properly.
Makes the transmission work to hard with out it working, and I don't want to burn that bad boy up. OUCH
I had to replace mine because of the dreaded orange wire. Tow mode was coming on intermittently due tot he wire being broken. This option worked great! As brand new replacement it is slightly different length/geometry than the OEM lever but function great.
Performs fine, it feels cheap. There's a stiff plastic seam where it was furnished together that's not the best for ergonomics. Overall, easy to install with a YouTube how to video. And again, it's function is great.
Color is off an Lea not match, an the feel is rough.
